The Hinder America's Vote Act (HAVA) is providing the Republicans with endless provisions-taken-out-of-context excuses for stomping down the vote. Meanwhile, the public is really, really concerned.
Sorry, that second part was over-the-top fiction. Anyway, read all about it at MY(P)WHAE text: Our Precious Right to Vote, and Other Naive Folk Concepts. I put it there so as to keep this blog focused on the pretend Halloween, vice the real version being played out across these once-United States.
Grandchild to grandfather, c. 2208: "Grandpa, what was voting?" Grandpa: "You know, I don't completely remember. That was so very long ago...."

Halloween 2008, Part 6!
Frankie got the series title wrong, by the way--it's Halloween 2008, Part 6. No dash. I didn't want to tell him, though, in case he was in a mood to rip my head off.
And, in fact, my preferred version is also incorrect. It should probably be Halloween, 2008--Part 6. Frankie was wrong, I was wrong. But there's a lesson in all this. Namely, if we could all see how alike we are in our wrongness, we could use that common ground to build a world in which all people are free. And happy. And allowed to vote even if their social security number is one digit off from the corresponding federal SSN database field.
Frankie, by the way, doesn't mind being known by the name of his builder (Victor Frankenstein), since "The Creature" is 1) less dignified and 2) is being used by another monster.
So, what can I say about today's 13-tune slaylist? I don't know--let me check and see what I put up. Ahh! Good stuff. Some obscure numbers, and some offbeat versions of well-known titles. Such as....
Josh Logan's Dinner with Drac and Witch Doctor, both from the late, great, highly cheap cover label Promenade. And a square dance version of The Thing. Annnnnnd a sound-alike version of Surfin' Bird from the Hit Parader label. No artist listed for the last, I'm afraid. Hit Parader never listed its artists.
We have the little-known He's Going to Eat Me Up, inspired by They're Coming to Take Me Away, the movie Jaws, and a line from the fairy-tale Little Red Riding Hood. This number is a Halloween regular, but (a Google check tells me) only at this blog. We have Elementary, My Dear Watson, another site regular, and one I finally have a date for--1960. Plus, we've got the title number from the 1956 Gerd Oswald suspense classic, A Kiss Before Dying.
Determined to make things even weirder, I've added four of my own strange concoctions, all strung together in one file--The Haunted Radio, Piano, Test Pattern, and Choir Room. These pieces are combinations of sound manipulations, live piano doodling on my Casio, and the multi-tracked "singing" voice of... me. Scarier than it sounds, believe me. "Sangria" is what I was singing in three parts at the very start of Choir, but it ended up sounding like... I'm not sure what.
Oddest of all, I don't even drink. Especially wine, which I don't like.
Oh, and Haunted Radio starts with a tiny segment of the narration to that theatre lobby 78 for The H-Man. In case you were wondering what on earth you were hearing.

Oh, my God

Archie Bunker would be horrified.
If this were a staged routine, no one would believe it. Too over the top. But it's no skit.
"Is Senator Obama an American, too?" "I don't know what he is."
Pray for our species.

Check the Halls
Your blogger, checking the hall. And wishing he hadn't.
Check the Halls is the latest addition to my Christmas at Halloween suite. Hope you enjoy.
The horror-movie chords are the result of from writing the melody in perfect fourths (melody on top) in the key of F Major, then duplicating the results in D and B Major. And then playing all six notes at the same time, whether they liked it or not.
And don't forget--check the halls! Buwa-ha-ha-haaa!

Christmas at Halloween: Call Dumb All the Faithful
"IT'S EARNED US A TON OF DOUGH!!" So report two leading calling-dumb-the-faithful experts, richard dawkins and bill maher. Heck, for the money they've made bashing faith, I'd call the faithful dumb, too.

The faithful are dumb!! (Okay, where's my dough?)
Darn. Works for them, but not for me. Maybe I need to get a publisher.
Anyway, my newest addition to my Christmas at Halloween suite is Call Dumb All the Faithful (The Atheist Creed), which I had a lot of fun composing. When writing the piano staff on my Noteworthy Composer® software, I accidentally left the sustain pedal depressed (via the Pedal mark), and the effect--sort of like a half-pedal--was cool. It added considerably to the overall spooky effect.
And I like the main patch, the name of which I forgot. It sounds like a film soundtrack strip on the fritz.
Here's the link to Call Dumb All the Faithful: CDATF.

Sunday morning gospel--Doris Akers ("Miss Gospel Music") with the Harvest Time Choir

(This is a repost from last year. I thought it was time to reshare this marvelous music.)
"Doris Akers' God-given skillfulness in directing our Harvest Time Choir in glorious harmony and Holy Ghost liberty will inspire you as it does us," begin the liner notes for Glad Tidings (pictured above). Inspiring is the word. Doris ("Miss Gospel Music") Akers (1923-1995) was a songwriter and performer possibly best known for her appearances with The Gaithers and for her songs Lead Me, Guide Me and Sweet, Sweet Spirit, both featured in the 1972 music documentary, Elvis on Tour. Here, she directs (from the piano) the Glad Tidings Temple's Harvest Time Choir of Vancouver, B.C. The organist is Doug Moody.
As nearly as I can determine, the Glad Tidings Temple is (or was) a Pentecostal church--Glad Tidings possibly being the denomination. Reg Layzell, who introduces Doris and the choir, was born in England but came to Canada with his family in 1907, when he was three. He became pastor of the Temple in 1948. I'm guessing about 1963 for this LP.
These excellent tracks make for some lively Sunday morning gospel.
